How Much Bandwidth do I Need to run Microsoft Online Services

These services are available for your business through an Internet connection; therefore, your network traffic will now travel between your business and the Internet. Please ensure that your Internet connection is able to handle the network traffic before activating these services.

How do I Calculate Network Traffic (Bandwidth) for Exchange Online?

Microsoft has defined what it considers a light, medium, heavy, or very heavy user at peak usage. Please see the table below to estimate your network traffic.

Example:

If a company has 100 medium Outlook 2007 users, then how do you calculate the average network traffic for this company?

  Network bytes/sec = [100 medium users x (2,600 KB/user/day)] ÷ (8 hours/day x 3,600 sec/hour) = 9.027 KB/sec

Note: Please assume that the daily peak is twice the average usage, so your network connection will need to support approximately 18.05 KB/sec.

How do I Calculate Network Traffic (Bandwidth) for SharePoint Online?

Before estimating the network bandwidth needed to run SharePoint Online, please consider the following assumptions that have been defined by Microsoft:

  a. An average page load transfers approximately 100 KB.

  b. A typical user generates approximately 36 page loads per hour.

  c. Approximately 10 percent of the users are active at the same time.

Example:

If a company has 1,000 SharePoint Online users, then how do you calculate the average network traffic for this company? A company with 1,000 users will have approximately 100 active users (10 percent) at any one time. Those 100 users will require approximately 100 x 8,000 bits per second or 800 kilobytes per second of available network bandwidth.

  Network bits/sec = (100,000 bytes/load x 8 bits/byte x 36 page loads/hour) ÷ 3,600 sec/hour = 8,000 bits/sec

Note: Please assume that the daily peak is twice the average usage, so your network connection will need to support approximately 1.6 Mb/sec. Also, SharePoint Online has a network latency requirement no greater than 250 milliseconds.

How do I Calculate Network Traffic (Bandwidth) for Office Live Meeting?

Before estimating the network bandwidth needed to run Office Live Meeting, please consider the following assumptions that have been defined by Microsoft:

Example:

If a company uses Office RoundTable and needs voice and video capabilities, then how do you calculate the minimum bandwidth?

  50 + 50 +100 = 200 KB/sec minimum bandwidth

Note: The bandwidth requirements listed are cumulative and are based off the Windows-based client, Office Live Meeting.
